Who we are?

ALGAplus is a Portuguese company pioneering the sustainable cultivation of certified organic seaweed using a land-based Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system. Combining tradition and innovation, ALGAplus produces high-quality macroalgae species year-round, ensuring full traceability, food safety, and environmental responsibility. ALGAplus is actively engaged in R&D and product development, working closely with scientific and industrial partners to unlock the potential of seaweed in multiple sectors, including food, cosmetics, and well-being markets.

I3-4-SEAWEED business case

Under the scope of the I3-4-SEAWEED project, ALGAplus is developing a new cosmetic product based on certified organic macroalgae. The product will reflect the unique bioactive profile of selected seaweed species cultivated at ALGAplus facilities, aiming to deliver skin benefits. The formulation is being developed in collaboration with the University of Coimbra, combining scientific insight with high-quality, traceable marine ingredients.

This case promotes the valorisation of natural marine resources through sustainable production, offering an environmentally responsible alternative to conventional cosmetics. By using seaweed cultivated without freshwater, arable land, or synthetic fertilizers, the product contributes to lower environmental impact and supports the blue bioeconomy. Moreover, it raises consumer awareness of ocean-based resources and encourages the use of clean, traceable, and locally produced ingredients, fostering both biodiversity preservation and local economic development.
